  1. "And as my mother begins, I am struck by a familiar feeling as if I am Cleo, again three years old, still eager to believe everything my mother has to say."(page 52). At this point in the story Pearl's mother, Winnie, begins to tell the story of the The Kitchen God. Pearl does not want to admit it but she appears to be as anxious to hear the story as Cleo is. She cannot, for some reason beyond her knowing, show any sign of excitement. Cleo represents innocence and youth. Pearl uses this analogy to demonstrate she was once so interested in hearing what her mother had to say and would make it evident. She would externally and internally show this feeling. She remembers this clearly. Pearl intentionally hides this side of her emotions from her mother and so this excitement remains internal. Deep down, I feel as if Pearl is happy that Cleo is showing so much interest towards this Kitchen God story because she wouldn't be able to show so much curiosity herself. This hesitation to be this way symbolizes Pearl and Winnie's continuing estranged mother-daughter relationship. The telling of this Kitchen God story is also where I believe the title of the book came from so later we will read if the significance.

  2. "You're hoping all the time his tongue will be sweet his head a little drunk so when he has his meeting with the big boss maybe he reports good things about you."pg.55
In the book the kitchen's god's wife by Amy Tan we are introduced to the allegory about the kitchen God. He grants luck to individuals based on their good actions, and disperses bad luck to the greedy. Auntie Helen before passing away leaves pearl with a picture of the kitchen God to symbolize the belief in being lucky enough to receive what she wants which is good health.Pearl is currently sick she could be diagnosed unexpectedly with a full-blown disease. The title of the kitchen god's wife now clearly makes sense, Pearl may not feel connected to her heritage or family but the tale of the kitchen God serves as a way to comfort pearl. once pearl leaves her mothers house she's in tears quietly to herself she sees the miles and miles that separate her and her mother. The separation between her and her mother isn't only physical it's also emotional, Pearl still has to confess to her mother about her sickness that she's been hiding for years now. Over all the author uses the element of luck to pearls situation to create hope. 🙏🏼
