  1. "So you can imagine my anger when Helen told me in her kitchen, right after that fish dinner. That she has decided to let all my secrets out."(page 73). At this point in the book the perspective has changed from Pearl's to her mother, Winnie's. Pearl and her both have secrets. That has become evident as we have followed along the reading in both of their point of views. I can't help but wonder would their secrets match up to one another, be equivalent, then cancel each other out? I can already sense one's secrets will be more betraying than the other. Winnie hopes that, by laying everything out on the table for Pearl and coming clean, they will come to an understanding and equilibrium. From the way Winnie speaks of how angry she was that Helen wasn't going to keep her secrets any longer, you can guess her secrets are very bad and do have to do with her family. Otherwise, why would she have gotten so angry? Winnie does expect the worse to happen from these secrets coming out at a time that does not suit her planning at all. It could either go way better than expected and their relationship will benefit from it. They could be closer than than ever before. Or it will harm their already estranged relationship. Helen deciding on her own to let these secrets out with consulting Winnie symbolizes their relationship. Although Winnie would like to believe they always have each other's back , this is not the case in the moment. The fish could represent the ambiguity of Helen deciding this with out lettin Winnie know first;it caught her completely off guard. Helen know that if she hadn't made such a decision now, Winnie might of never mentioned anything about her secrets to Pearl.

  2. "The saddest part when you lose someone you love that person keeps changing. And later you wonder is this the same person I lost? Maybe you lost more maybe less than 10,000 different things that come from your memory or imagination-and you do not know which is which ,
which was true which is false.",this quote seems to really highlight the theme which after reading three chapters I believe is lessons on relationships between family and your significant other. Personally I can relate to Pearl, her and her mother's relationship mimics mines and my mothers. Now that I finished reading the chapter that was from the point of view of pearls mom I feel less immature . I feel less ignorant about my mother's duty to discipline me and raise me into a responsible adult. Also when it comes down to the quote I once again admire Amy Tan's sense of writing style because it's extremely realistic and relatable. This book also teaches me Chinese culture and traditions and I feel fortunate to be able to read about them and learn. For example Yi Wan and Chinese means 10,000 this and that it's used as an exaggeration describing a big number. ((i'm excited to keep on reading finishing the novel))
